British PM Boris Johnson & Donald Trump Have New York Roots

Both the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and the prime minister of Great Britain, Boris Johnson, have roots in New York State. Both men were born in New York City. Trump was born in Queens in 1946 while Johnson was born in Manhattan’s upper East Side in 1964. Johnson’s father, Stanley, was studying economics at Columbia University when Boris was born.

The Johnsons moved back to England three months after Boris’s birth. Nevertheless his United State’s birth gave him dual citizenship.

Johnson renounced his US citizenship in 2016, the year Trump became president. According to NPR, it was hard for Johnson to renounce his US citizenship, but he did so because of the IRS. He told NPR, “You may not believe this but if you’re an American citizen, America exercises this incredible doctrine of global taxation…The United States comes after me, would you believe it…for capital gains tax on the sale of your first residence which is not taxable in Britain, but they’re trying to hit me with some bill, can you believe it?”

In 2019, after 73 years as a resident of New York State, President Trump changed his residency to Florida due he said to a lack of respect from New York officials. He told reporters “They haven’t treated me properly.”

At a rally, he said, “I pay millions of taxes. Millions and millions of dollars in New York and they’ve never treated me, you know, since I became president, they just haven’t treated, I think the office with the kind of respect.”

When asked if he would pay his US tax bill, Boris Johnson told NPR “Why should I? I haven’t lived in the United States for years now, well, since I was five years old.”

Boris Johnson is not the first British prime minister with New York State roots as we reported in an earlier piece.
